Anchorman Adam McKay 9 1
My stomach hurts and my eyes are burning a little from laughing so hard during Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. I don't see a lot of comedies, largely due to the fact I don't find most film comedy funny enough to be worth the time. Sitcoms work better for comedy in my esteem. 30 minutes packed with laughs vs. the average comedy film's 90 minutes with a handful of really good laughs which are all shown in the trailer.
Anchorman was a solid 80 minutes of laughter. I say 80 because the first ten minutes had me worried. The film's look at the war of the sexes in the 70's begins by portraying the all male new's teams mysoginism in all it's puerile glory. With Steve Carell's revelation as weatherman Brick Tamland that he would one day be tested with an IQ of 45 and considered mentally retarded, the film hits the audience with one random swing of humor after another.
From gang-style fights between news teams involving bats and switchblades(as well as an homage to Planet of the Apes) to a showdown between a dog and a Kodiak Bear involving subtitles, Anchorman was my kind of comedy. It's like watching long form improv with a budget. Carell's portrayal of Brick is a scene stealer, and with Will Ferrell's portrayal of Burgundy, that's saying a lot. Christina Applegate is solid as Ferrell's love interest and nemesis, jumping from straight man to delivering gags with equal ease. I really hope we'll get to see her in more roles with this film under her belt. She's come a long way since the Bundy family days.
Ferrell is a brilliant comedy writer, and Anchorman is proof. I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard, or recommended a comedy as a film to see in the theaters. The comedy is not for everyone, but if you are a fan of Will Ferrell, this movie is for you.
